Starting something new can feel a little intimidating, especially when it comes to martial arts. You might be excited, nervous, or unsure of what to expect — and that’s completely normal. At Element Martial Arts Calgary, we want to make your first Kung Fu class as smooth and comfortable as possible. One of the easiest ways to feel more confident walking through our doors is to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring to your first class and why each item matters.

Comfortable Workout Clothes

You don’t need to buy a uniform for your very first class. Instead, wear clothing you can move freely in — something like what you’d wear to the gym. A T-shirt and athletic pants or shorts are ideal. Avoid clothing with zippers or buttons, as these can scratch your training partners or get caught during movements. Once you decide to continue training, we’ll help you get the appropriate Kung Fu uniform.

A Refillable Water Bottle

Hydration is key during physical activity. Bring a water bottle to keep with you on the sidelines so you can take sips during short breaks. Staying hydrated helps you maintain energy and focus throughout the class. We also have water fountains available if you forget your bottle, but bringing your own is always a good idea.

A Small Towel

You might break a sweat, especially during warm-ups or drills. A small hand towel can help you stay dry and comfortable. While it’s not essential, many beginners find it useful — especially if you’re nervous and prone to sweating a bit more than usual on your first day.

A Positive, Open Attitude

This might not be something you pack in your bag, but it’s one of the most important things to bring with you. Kung Fu isn’t just about learning physical techniques — it’s also about developing discipline, patience, and respect. Everyone at Element Martial Arts Calgary was once a beginner. Our instructors and students are here to support you, not judge you. Be open to learning, making mistakes, and asking questions.

Any Medical Needs or Information

If you have any medical conditions, past injuries, or concerns, please let your instructor know before class begins. Your safety is very important to us, and we can adjust activities as needed to keep you feeling secure and supported. If you use an inhaler or require any medications during physical activity, be sure to bring them with you.

A Willingness to Try Something New

Starting Kung Fu is a personal journey — one that looks different for everyone. You don’t need to be in great shape or know anything about martial arts to begin. What matters most is your willingness to try. Whether you're looking to improve fitness, build confidence, or just try something different, your first step is simply showing up. We're here to guide you the rest of the way.
