Starting something new always brings a mix of excitement and uncertainty. If you’ve signed up for your first Kung Fu class at Element Martial Arts Calgary—congratulations! You’re taking the first step toward building strength, confidence, and discipline. Like with anything new, it’s natural to wonder what you need to bring.

Whether you’re a teen, adult, or parent preparing for your child’s first class, this guide will walk you through exactly what to pack so you feel ready and comfortable from the moment you step into the studio.

Wear Comfortable, Athletic Clothing

You don’t need a uniform for your very first class. All you need is athletic clothing that lets you move easily. We recommend:

  • Stretchy workout pants or leggings
  • A fitted T-shirt or athletic top
  • Layers if you get cold easily

Avoid clothing that’s too baggy, tight, or has zippers or buttons that could get in the way. You’ll be doing a lot of movement, from stances to kicks, so make sure your outfit helps, not hinders, your practice.

Bring a Water Bottle

Kung Fu is a full-body workout. Even during beginner classes, you’ll likely work up a sweat. Staying hydrated helps you stay focused and recover faster, so we always recommend bringing a water bottle.

If you forget yours, we’ve got a water fountain available—but having your bottle nearby helps you stay refreshed during short breaks in class.

Come with Clean Feet or Indoor Training Shoes

At Element Martial Arts Calgary, most classes are done barefoot on clean mats. This helps with stability, balance, and grip. If you're more comfortable in shoes, we ask that you bring clean, indoor-only martial arts shoes with soft soles. Street shoes aren’t allowed on the mats to keep the training space clean and safe.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure—just ask us before class, and we’ll help you figure out what’s best.

A Small Towel (Optional but Helpful)

Some people sweat a lot during physical activity, and that’s normal. If you need it, pack a small towel to wipe your face or hands during water breaks. It’s not a requirement, but many students find it makes the class more comfortable.

The little things help you focus better and enjoy the session more.

An Open Mind and Willingness to Learn

This might not fit in your gym bag, but it’s one of the most important things you can bring. Your first Kung Fu class isn’t about being perfect—it’s about showing up, trying something new, and learning at your own pace.

You might feel unsure at first, and that’s completely okay. Everyone was a beginner once. The most important thing is to be open, respectful, and ready to have fun while learning something meaningful.
