Boxing is a great way for kids to stay active, build confidence, and develop focus—and at Element Martial Arts Calgary, we make sure it’s always safe and fun. We understand that every child learns differently, and our programs are designed to meet kids where they are, encouraging them to grow in a positive, welcoming environment.

Here are five of our favourite boxing drills that we use in class. Each one helps kids learn core boxing skills, but more importantly, they keep the experience engaging and age-appropriate.

1. Mirror Drill: Building Focus and Coordination

This partner drill is a favourite with kids. One child takes the lead and performs simple movements—such as stepping to the side, throwing a jab, or ducking under an imaginary punch—while the other child mirrors them. After a minute or two, they switch roles.

It’s a fun way to develop coordination, timing, and focus without any physical contact. Kids learn to observe, react quickly, and stay balanced, all while laughing and learning together. It also builds teamwork, as they need to cooperate to make the drill work smoothly.

2. Pad Work: Practicing Technique with Encouragement

There’s something incredibly rewarding about hitting pads—it gives kids immediate feedback and a boost of confidence. In this drill, kids pair up with a coach or a partner holding focus pads. They work on basic punch combinations like jab-cross or jab-cross-hook, all while moving and resetting between combos.

This drill teaches proper technique, helps with timing, and develops hand-eye coordination. It’s also a great outlet for energy and builds trust between the child and their coach. We always keep it light, encouraging, and paced to suit each child’s comfort level.

3. Shadowboxing Games: Imagination Meets Movement

Shadowboxing allows kids to practice movement and technique without any contact. We turn it into a fun game by adding creative prompts—like pretending to dodge falling leaves, punch floating balloons, or move like their favourite superhero.

These playful versions of shadowboxing help children feel more comfortable with the rhythm of boxing while encouraging creativity. They work on their footwork, balance, and form, all in a low-pressure way that builds muscle memory over time. Plus, they get to use their imagination, which keeps it engaging and fun.

4. Agility Ladder: Footwork Made Fun

Footwork is one of the most important parts of boxing, and the agility ladder makes it exciting. Kids perform quick step patterns, hops, and directional movements through the ladder on the floor. We often turn it into a timed challenge or relay race to keep the energy high.

This drill improves balance, speed, and coordination—all essential to boxing. It also gets their heart rates up and helps them stay light on their feet. Because it’s easily adjusted for different ages and fitness levels, everyone can participate at their own pace and still feel successful.

5. Glove Tag: Safe, Playful Sparring Practice

Glove tag is always a hit with our younger boxers. In this game, kids wear their boxing gloves and try to gently tap their partner on a designated target, like the shoulder or knee, while avoiding being tagged themselves. It’s fast-paced, silly, and completely non-intimidating.

What kids don’t realize is that they’re practicing key boxing skills—like defensive movement, reaction time, and distance control. Since it’s structured to be non-contact and low-pressure, it’s a great introduction to more advanced sparring down the road, without any of the stress.
