Starting kickboxing as an adult is a great way to boost fitness, learn practical skills, and relieve stress. It’s energizing, empowering, and fun. But like with any new skill, it’s easy to make a few mistakes when you first begin. At Element Martial Arts Calgary, we work with many adult beginners, and we see the same missteps come up time and time again.

Here are three common mistakes adults make in kickboxing, plus simple ways to avoid them and keep your progress strong.

1. Throwing Power Without Proper Form

It’s tempting to go all-in and hit hard right away. But focusing too much on power, without learning the right form, often leads to poor technique or injury.

How to avoid it:

Start slow and learn the mechanics first: how to move your hips, where your feet should be, and how to keep your hands up. Good form builds real power later.

2. Ignoring Your Footwork

Footwork is one of the most overlooked parts of kickboxing. Many new students stay flat-footed or don’t move with intention, which limits both speed and balance.

How to avoid it:

Stay light on your feet. Practice shifting your weight, pivoting, and stepping with purpose. Great footwork sets up strong punches and safer defence

3. Skipping the Basics Too Soon

Some adults rush to advanced drills without mastering the basics. This can slow down progress and lead to confusion or burnout.

How to avoid it:

With foundational movements until they feel natural. Jabs, crosses, front kicks, and guard position all deserve your attention. Progress comes faster when your base is strong.
