Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat discipline that incorporates all combat sports and martial arts, with a particular emphasis on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and boxing, as well as other martial arts such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, judo, and Olympic wrestling. MMA allows for striking and grappling from a standing position or from the ground. The term "Mixed Martial Arts" was first documented during the UFC 1 event.
Mixed martial arts has roots dating back to ancient China and Greece, with the usage of mixed combat arts in many cultures. In China, the Leitai combat form was created, which combined boxing, wrestling, and other Chinese martial arts. In ancient Greece, the sport of Pankration displayed grappling and striking similar to modern-day MMA.
In the early 20th century, multi-stylistic contests were held in Japan and the Four Asian Dragons countries (South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). Meanwhile, Brazil saw the rise of Vale-Tudo, which became famous for its unrestricted fights, and the Gracie family gained popularity for their fighting style by promoting Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Today, MMA is synonymous with the UFC, which was founded in 1993 by businessman Art David and martial artist Rorion Gracie. The organization has taken over the martial arts culture around the world.
